What Are Cryogenic Liquid Tanks?

Static tanks are typically used in a fixed location, while mobile tanks are often mounted on wheels and used within labs or workshops. They can be either pressurised or non-pressurised, and are available in a range of sizes, pressures, and flow rates. They can also be available in non-pressurised open neck vessels called Dewar flasks, which are typically used for situations that require direct access to the cryogenic liquid.

These vessels are inspected and maintained by an inspection body, which can be a government agency or a company. They must also be revalidated on a regular basis to ensure their safety and that they can withstand the rigours of everyday operation.

When they are revalidated, it is recommended that the tank is taken out of service for a period of time before it is re-inspected again to ensure it is still safe to operate. This revalidation process can be costly, and should only be performed by a reputable and trustworthy examination body.

If the tank isn’t revalidated regularly, it can become dangerous or even unusable. This is why responsible gas suppliers will only fill them after they’re confident that they’re safe to do so. This revalidation process also has to be followed up by periodic inspections and tests, which can only be carried out by an inspector or an external body. This is a very expensive and time-consuming process, so it’s important that all parties involved follow this procedure.

Upon revalidation, the tank must have an inspection report created and kept alongside the data it holds for the duration of its life. This is a critical process that can’t be overlooked, as it’s essential for the continued safe use of the tank.
