All the colors of the rainbow…

Painting aluminum venetian blinds can be fun and rewarding, especially when you step back and look at what you’ve done. You can add a bit of sunshine, a few colors of the rainbow, and the endless sea and sky simply by changing the color of your aluminum venetian blinds in a few easy steps. When you chose this type of window treatment, you probably went by its durability and easy maintenance. However, as is often the case, people tend to get bored of looking at the same window over and over again. That’s probably the right time to start a remodeling project that includes repainting your aluminum venetian blinds, which is a cheaper option than buying new ones. Since you’re probably looking for an inexpensive solution, here are some tips for painting aluminum venetian blinds in a few easy steps.

If you have decided to paint your metal venetian blinds, this is what you should do.

1. The first thing you will need to do is remove the blinds. Don’t worry, it’s not as difficult as it may seem at first. Simply use a screwdriver to remove the end caps from the bottom of the blinds. Then untie the rope connecting the blinds and remove the slats. If you have previously installed your Venetians, this should be a piece of cake for you. On the other hand, if everything seems complicated or you’re just not as savvy, simply follow the manufacturer’s instructions you received when you purchased your blinds, or ultimately ask someone to help you.

2. The next step is to clean the blinds. Your aluminum venetian blinds should be cleaned properly and all dust, dirt and debris should be removed properly as the paint should be applied only on clean and smooth surfaces otherwise your paint job will be hampered and you might face some inconsistencies . Cleaning aluminum shutters is very easy. For a deeper clean, you can soak them in water (bathtub, for example), wash them with a little soap or mild detergent, and rinse them under the shower. You can also use a washcloth or sponge and a bucket of clean, cold water. Simply add a little soap to the cloth, apply to each slat, and rinse with another clean, damp cloth. That’s it. Keep in mind that your blinds need to be completely dry before you add paint, so use a dry towel to pick up any remaining water, or better yet, leave them outside to dry.

3. Now let’s move on to painting your aluminum venetian blinds. It’s best to do it outdoors, as it involves the use of spray paint that could spray and damage surrounding objects. If you decide to paint your shutters inside, always take a few precautions, that is, properly protect your floors, walls, and furniture. Before adding the paint, you will need to add an adhesive primer. The primer specially designed for metal will allow the paint to adhere to the surface of the metal shutter and will also cover any existing stains. Apply the primer to each blind slat, making sure to cover the entire surface evenly. You will need to let the primer dry (about an hour) when you can apply it to the other side of the blind.

4. When the primer is completely dry, you can start painting your aluminum venetian blinds. Choose spray paint for metal surfaces. You should add the paint in more than one coat to get the intensity of color you’re likely to want and to prevent the paint from peeling or fading over time. Add two to three coats of paint to each clapboard and allow to dry (again, optimally an hour, but this may depend on the paint). Repeat the process on the other side of the blind. When the paint is dry, you can reassemble and reattach your blinds. Consider your job done.

Always keep in mind that you are not limited by using just one color for your blinds. You could mix colors, make some patterns, paint each slat a different color. It is completely up to you. However, if you think that painting your metal venetian blinds is a tedious and boring job, you can always get the real deal, that is, some new and colorful aluminum blinds in a whole range of colors.
