Midnight in Paris Movie Review

Woody Allen’s latest film, Midnight in Paris, is a sly act of self-critique as much as it is a romantic fantasy. Set in Paris, it deals with themes of nostalgia and the loss of a bygone age. Unlike his pessimistic previous movie, however, this one is more lighthearted and filled with dazzling cinematography.

Midnight in Paris follows Gil (Owen Wilson), a Hollywood screenwriter who longs to become a serious writer. His ambition is to become a writer like Hemingway, and he considers himself to be a hack if he can’t write movies well. He dreams of living in Paris during the ’20s and writing novels instead of writing movies. He’d be able to hang out with these famous writers, including Ernest Hemingway, Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, and Gertrude Stein, who lived in Paris during that time.

Midnight in Paris is a love letter from Woody Allen to the city that he loves. The movie opens with postcard images of Paris. It’s a glossy depiction of Woody’s travels around Europe, and we can immediately tell that Paris means a lot to him.
