Breed Description

The Ibizan Hound is an agile deer-like dog from the hound group. This graceful breed with a remarkable outline can range in weight from 45 to 65 pounds and average between 24 and 29 inches in height.

Coat

The Ibizan Hound has two types of fur, namely short and wired. The Shorthair has the shortest hair on the ears and head, and the longest under the tail and the back of the thighs. The Wire-hair can be 1 to 3 inches long, possibly with a thick mustache. There is much more on the back of the thighs, the back and the tail. Both coat varieties are harsh and neither is preferable to the other. Their coat color comes in red or white, solid or any mix.

Exercise

An active and highly energetic breed, the Ibizan Hound is highly recommended for homes with a large garden, as they require a great deal of exercise. A securely fenced area should also be provided, as this breed is known to easily jump over a fence.

Temper

The Ibizan Hound is active, friendly and moderately intelligent. They are among the world’s clown dogs, charming the people around them with their comic antics. Although they can be a bit stubborn and independent at times, they will accept training well if positive training techniques are used, but will recoil from sanction-based methods. They are calm by nature, but will bark if they think the situation calls for it. They are sensitive and get along well with children and other dogs. They normally make excellent house pets, but they are athletic and active and therefore require plenty of exercise each day.

Overview

The Ibizan Hound is a deer-like podenco, elegant and agile. Its amber eyes and large ears exhibit an exotic appearance for this breed. They can have a long, coarse coat with a bushy mustache or a smooth coat. This breed has unsurpassed high and wide jumping ability, which is a great attribute when hunting in the rugged terrain of Cuba.

Watch out

The Ibizan Hound’s coat requires minimal grooming. Light brushing and/or combing along with a good rubbing with a damp cloth is required for low maintenance coats. Nails must be kept short and exercise must be provided daily.

Training

The Ibizan Hound is an intelligent breed and will learn new tricks with ease. They are very sensitive to noise, so harsh tones should never be used when training this breed. Training in small stages is recommended as they can easily become overwhelmed with overbearing training tactics. This dog requires regular stimulation and learns best in an interactive setting. Harsh manners, criticism, and tone can make this dog aggressive.

character

The Ibizan Hound is an excellent hunting dog, as well as a charming family pet. They are usually gentle, reserved, dignified, and do not feel comfortable in a pressured situation. They are ideal for owners with a trusting, calm and patient disposition with a time to properly socialize this breed.
