Creativity is not just about being eloquent about the beauty of a

forest stream or rugged shoreline. In fact, the most difficult

creativity is often the most rewarding thing: being creative on a day-to-day basis

life aspects. That means to be observing everything, and I

to mean everything – Around you.

Get started with this exercise:

Sit in a park, the mall, Starbucks, wherever there are many

sights, smells, sounds. Use all five senses to enjoy your surroundings.

Do you hear the scraping of dried leaves or the hiss of espresso?

machine? Do you smell the richness of the damp earth or the scent of

coffee, or are you overwhelmed by the cologne of the man sitting next to

you? How does the bench, chair, or floor feel under you?

Take it all. Then write!

Find the best word to describe each sight, smell, gesture,

feeling, sound and whatever else you can think of. If your writing is

some of the five senses are missing: sight, smell, hearing, touch and even

taste – go back and work it again.

Creativity through observation is a lot of work, but once you master

That, your writing will be much richer and more rewarding for the addition.
