Although the first thing you probably think about when preparing for a move is packing, there are other considerations you should take into account before you move. Make sure you have addressed each of the following items and have not left anything to the last minute.

Fixing up your current residence. Whether you rent or own, you may have some home repair jobs due that you’ve been putting off. If you’re selling your home, you may have told the buyer or real estate agent that you would fix certain problem areas before you moved. Allow sufficient time to correctly complete each task. Even if you are renting, make sure the apartment is exactly as it was when you moved in so you don’t lose any of your security deposit. Don’t forget to include these projects in your moving budget if you have one. If you have to hire professional help, it will likely be more expensive, but it may be worth it.

Cleaning. Even if you think you keep your house pretty clean, you may be surprised by what is hidden behind the sofa and under the cupboard. Get a head start on cleaning before move-in day by moving furniture and wiping down cabinets. Make sure you have all the cleaning supplies you will need and include this cost in your moving budget. If you can afford it, a cleaning company might be worth the extra expense if it saves you valuable time. Professional cleaners can drastically reduce the time it takes to get your property back to pristine condition and, if you rent, could guarantee that you get your security deposit back.

additional insurance. While your mover will likely provide you with insurance, the standard plan may not be enough to replace your valuables. Especially fragile items, such as china and glass, can break easily. If you have multiple items that are in danger of breaking, you may want to consider purchasing additional insurance. Also, insurance payments are taxable, so you may not receive the full amount of the standard rate. Consider the replacement value of your belongings and decide if additional insurance is right for you.

Arrive at your new home. If you are hiring a moving company, decide what type of transportation you will use to get to your new home. You will most likely take several items with you personally, especially if you are moving to another state or country. Make sure that your choice of transport has enough space for your luggage. Incorporate additional transportation expenses into your moving budget. Set aside money for extra expenses like hotels, meals, and extra baggage fees.

Keys and utilities. Make sure you have arranged how you will collect your new keys before you leave. It is best to have the keys before moving day if possible. Also make sure the electricity and water are on when you arrive. If the utilities are off when you arrive, it could take days to schedule appointments and meet the technicians.
